Spiritually stronger in 40 days! by Serge Roux-Levrat (Book Review)

Throughout his career, he was able to work for some of the world’s most admired companies, and at the age of 37 he realized a life-long ambition: to become CEO of a publicly quoted company. In this capacity, he had the privilege of joining the world elite at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in 2001.

By all appearances, his life was great. Internally, however, he was restless and unhappy, and was searching for the true meaning of life. He sought success by climbing the corporate ladder, but slowly realized that success did not equal joy or peace or purpose; and he felt guilty not to be happy when life had dealt him such a good hand of cards compared to millions of other people.

What followed was a seven-year period of soul-searching in what he calls “God’s detoxification clinic.” Here, he found Jesus – not a religion, not a set of rules to follow, not an ideology, not a philosophy, but a real person, alive, loving, and all-powerful. Here, he learned to put his trust and sense of security only in God – not in money, not in social standing, and not in professional success. Here, the unconditional, unfaltering love of God changed his whole life, mindset, and priorities.

Book Review

It was Serge’s testimony that convinced me to review his book. I am endlessly blessed when I read of testimonies such as Serge’s, it reminds me that so many times God takes us to the end of ourselves before we finally have that change of mind and admit that “God, I am wrong and you are right — without you I am nothing!” I think this is exactly where God took Serge as he spent all of those years “soul-searching” after he lost his lucrative job. Sometimes we need to take time to look deep to find what is so clearly available to everyone — salvation by Jesus Christ and the power to live an abundant life on this planet (John 10:10).

In his book Spiritually stronger in 40 days!, Serge offers believers a tool that helps them focus upon something different each day. It is a fully structured plan that must be followed to the letter for maximum benefit to the soul. It comes with great instructions on how to follow the plan. Serge encourages the reader to do only one day at a time after first spending time with Jesus to unload burdens that will get in the way of your devotion. When you are finished with your daily reading you should meditate upon it — or as the psalmist would say “Selah”. You must believe that you will be able to finish this whole plan and Serge offers my life verse as the power that will enable you to do it “I can do all things through Christ which stengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13).

While I have not finished my 40 days yet, I find that the encouragement even at the very top right of each new day is something I look forward to, some of these simple tips (in a little box) include:

• Don’t spend money on what is not bread!
• Do not let fear paralyze you!
• Discovering and giving love is your main mission here on earth!

These tidbits are followed by a lesson which teaches how you can achieve and avoid. Serge continually reminds us that when we are on the right path Satan is always waiting to attack and throw us off course. This is a biblical truth because the Bible tells us that we are to “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.” (1 Peter 5:8-9)

Serge even includes homework for each day. Don’t let that deter you from getting this e-Book! The homework is usually an exercise which helps you to meditate upon what you just read in the lesson. It is a way taking what you read and applying it to your life — personalizing it.

Theologically I found myself disagreeing with some things so caution should be used here. One of my professors in college used to say “Reading books, especially religious books, is sometimes like eating fish — you gotta eat the meat and spit out the bones.” Fear not because  this 40 day devotion book has far more meat than bones. I am enjoying my journey.

Overall Recommendation

This e-Book is for believers only. I say this because to be spiritually transformed you need the Holy Spirit and someone who does not believe the gospel of salvation does not have the power of the Holy Spirit. However, you don’t need to know allot about the Bible to benefit from the 40 day journey and purchasing this e_Book will be the best few dollars you have spent in a long time. Glean the best parts and leave the very few things on which you might disagree. It is a great devotional and quite unique from others I have read.
