Stronghold

My strength, my rock, my fortress and my deliverer. So many ways to describe our Almighty God and Father. Psalm 18:2

“I will love thee, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.” (Psalm 18:2)

My strength, my rock, my fortress and my deliverer.  So many ways to describe our Almighty God and Father. This is a Psalm of David, it was written on the day that the LORD delivered him from his enemies and from the hand of the evil King Saul (Ps 18:1).

This psalm gives us the lyrics to quite a popular chorus that is sung in many churches.  Beginning with verse 3 and then changing tune a bit and adding verse 46.  See if you recognize it:

♪♫ I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.

The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.

I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.   I will call upon the LORD! ♪♫

David says that: (Psa 18:4)  “The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.” And in his distress he called upon the LORD and cried unto God.  David knew God to be his great rescuer and deliverer.  He was confident that God would not forsake him.

What a great reminder that David left us in his song.  Next time you sing that familiar chorus consider your “Stronghold”.  He will deliver you, just call upon Him.

“He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me.” (Psalms 18:17)
