ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Last month an ambulance driver was hit by a drunk driver in Santa Fe. Vanessa Carrillo, the ambulance driver has been recovering from the head-on collision that left her with 35 broken bones. The disabled Carrillo is not expected to walk for months.
While Carrillo escaped the tragic crash with her life, the driver of the other vehicle, Kylene Holmes that was heading the wrong way at speeds estimated of up to 100 MPH was killed. Holmes and her companion Jennifer Belvin had been offered a ride home after consuming alcohol at the Cowgirl BBQ in Santa Fe. Holmes chose not to accept the ride and in the wake of that poor choice killed herself and seriously injured an innocent young girl.
It is interesting to note that the driver of the ambulance was only 19 years old. She has had a good attitude about the incident and according to a report by local ABC news affiliate KOAT, channel 7, she is simply happy to be alive. This young girl is wise beyond her years, for she knows that the driver of the other car could have made a better choice and prevented the whole accident. Yet Holmes, who was 26 years old, made a foolish choice and got behind that wheel while intoxicated and suffered the ultimate consequence with her own life.
Carrillo is recovering and has shared that she will pursue her education at the University of New Mexico. Miss Carrillo has dreams of being an Emergency Room doctor.
