Dolphin Island Movie Review

Recently I was offered an opportunity to review the film “Dolphin Island”, a great and fun film for the whole family. It is a heart-warming story of a young girl and her grandfather who run a nonprofit marine research and conservation center. This film is available on demand beginning March 2, 2021. Here is my review.

Film Summary

Staring Peter Woodward (Gramps), Tyler Jade Nixon (Annabel), Dionne Lea Williams (Mrs. Rolle), Aaron Burrows (Mateo), and Bob Bledsoe (Mr. Carbunkle). Set in the lovely Caribbean Islands, from the very start of the film you want to visit the beautiful teal blue ocean and be part of this place that tells of a special relationship between teenage Annabel and Jonah (Gramps), her fisherman grandfather.

The Paradise is soon spoiled when Gramps and Annabel receive a visit from her maternal grandparents and their lawyer. The New York grandparents’ lawyer informs Gramps that they are revisiting the custody agreement that placed Annabel with Gramps 10 years ago when she was orphaned by the death of her parents.

It is great to meet some other characters on the island also. There’s Mitzy, the playful and friendly Dolphin who takes me back to my childhood love of Flipper; Annabel’s new friend Mateo and his Mom (and Annabel’s social worker) Mrs. Rolle; the crafty, cunning and deceitful Mr. Carbunkle as well as Annabel’s grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Williams’.

I do not want to spoil it for you so you will have to watch the movie to see how things progress and wind up.

Things That Jumped Out At Me

I think everyone would like to live on this island as it is a true Paradise. I like how this movie deals with real people and a situation that is also very realistic. It is clear that Gramps has provided a wonderful living environment for his grand daughter. Though the well-being of the minor child needs to be considered, this is a good example of something that “ain’t broken” and needs no fixing. We see how misinformation and misconceptions can be twisted and used to make judgments that lead to unnecessary decisions that in the long run will do nothing more than threaten to ruin healthy and loving relationships.

I wrote down some words that came to mind as I watched. Watch the movie, see if you can add to the list. There are so, so many emotions and characteristics throughout, here are a few: Love, Forgiveness, Friendship, Selfishness, Accountability, Courage, Craftiness, Dishonesty, Deceitfulness, Regret, Loyalty, Helpfulness, Concern, Humility, Confession, and Faith.

Notes & Audience

This film is Winner of Best Feature Film (Christian Film Festival) and is Dove-approved for all ages. I believe children as young as 7 or 8 years old would enjoy this film. This is a wholesome family-friendly movie.

Overall Recommendation

Need a Family Movie Night? This is a great film for just that occasion. It has a great storyline and the characters are believable and great actors. Consider not only renting this movie on demand, but perhaps you would like own it in your video streaming library.
