Trying Faith

“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.” (James 1:2-3)

Divers temptations?  Well “divers” is another way of saying “many; an infinite number”.  When I read this verse I automatically think of Romans 5:1-5.  It seems to parallel what James has written here.  Take a look:

(Romans 5:1-5)  Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: [2] By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. [3] And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; [4] And patience, experience; and experience, hope: [5]And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

We begin with faith and are encouraged by Paul and James to endure the temptations and tribulations because when we look back on the experience we can be blessed to know that God took us through it before and He will do it again.  See the pattern?  Faith -> Patience -> Experience -> Hope.  I have often heard and repeat “Never pray for patience!”  For when we do, God just might give us something that tries our faith and requires us to suffer long through an experience.

When we are in a situation that seems impossible we should ask the Lord, “What are you trying to show me in this?”  Next time … try faith and see how it can turn into hope!

Thinks to Think About and Do

1. Find at least one other Bible passage that talks about faith.

2. Look at Galatians 5:22-25 and write down what you think “fruit of the Spirit” means.

3. Share this post with at least one other person.
